Day 1 - Lisboa

The first day we spent in Lisboa. We met our friend Tomas at the airport, who became our guide for following two days. At first we did a short walk accross the city center with the only aim - to get to a tram to Belem. Belem is one of the places under UNESCO's protection. The Tower of Belem was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's expedition; it is a reminder of the great maritime discoveries that laid the foundations of the modern world. Monastery comes from the 16th century. UNESCO classified it as a "World Cultural Heritage Site" in 1984. It is considered to be one of the best masterpieces of Portuguese architecture. You can find, for example, a tomb of Vasco da Gama. Monastery is also one of the buildings, which survived destructive earthquake in the 18th century. In the afternoon we did a nice walk throughout the city center and in the evening we had the very first possibility to try Portuguese cuisine.
